About Handbell (Ghanta) & Dorje (Vajra) Sets

The handbell and dorje are the principal ritual objects of Tantric Buddhism. They are used to help induce a state of meditation, or relaxed awareness. Traditionally they are used together, the bell in the left hand and the dorje in the right.

The bell represents yin or feminine energy. It is the symbol of truth, or the wisdom of the Void. The dorje represents yang or masculine energy. It symbolizes the diamond scepter that cuts through all obstacles. It signifies appropriate and skillful action, which is compassion. The use of the bell and dorje together symbolizes the union of wisdom and compassion, which is enlightenment.
