Here Buddha is in the earth-touching, or Bhumisparsa mudra. The right arm is over the right knee, with the palm turned inward, fingers extended downward touching the lotus throne. The left hand lies on the lap with palm upward. This gesture of touching the earth, or calling the earth to witness, celebrates Gautam Buddha's victory over the demon Mara's attempts to disrupt his meditations under the Bodhi tree.
